Download Bitdefender Safebox 1.0
Bitdefender Safebox 1.0

These days, people work across a variety of different platforms: computers, mobile phones and tablets. Ensuring the latest version of your data travels with you can be tricky if you rely on manually copying it between devices, which is why so many of today’s cloud-based backup tools also work by synchronising data between supported devices.

Online backup solutions are ten-a-penny these days, which is why Bitdefender’s Safebox feels like it’s a little late to the party. It works on Windows and Android, with iPad and iPhone support coming shortly, and offers 2GB free online storage space, with paid-for solutions offering up to 60GB of online storage a year.

It’s simple enough to use: install the free app, sign up for a free account, log in and then start selecting which files you want to back up. Once selected, initial copies are uploaded to your secure online account – encrypted of course – ready for synchronising to other computers and devices (just sign in with the same account details, then choose what to sync), accessing via a web browser (log in at https://my.bitdefender.com/en_us/safebox), or sharing securely with selected others, such as family and friends.

It’s all very efficient – changes to files are immediately uploaded to the server, and you can easily restore previous versions of files simply by right-clicking the file in Windows itself. The user interface is simple and uncluttered and it does what it says on the tin.

Unfortunately, so do so many other online backup services, and there’s nothing here to make Bitdefender Safebox stand out from the crowd. Most other services offer the same sync, share and backup tools, encrypt your data, work across multiple platforms (including Mac) and offer free accounts – in the case of AVG LiveKive and SugarSync, you get 5GB, while the forthcoming Windows 8 will have Windows Live SkyDrive built right into the interface, which currently offers up to 25GB free storage, admittedly most of which is currently only accessible through your web browser.

What Safebox does have going for it is simplicity, but it’s not enough on its own to make it the must-have cloud backup product, particularly if you’re already signed up with someone else. via downloadcrew

Nessus 5.0 Vulnerability Scanner Releases
Nessus 5.0 Vulnerability Scanner
Tenable Network Security announced Nessus 5.0 vulnerability and configuration assessment solution for enterprises and security professionals. Nessus version 5.0 introduces key features and improvements, separated into the four major phases of the vulnerability scanning process:

Installation and management (for enhanced usability) - Nessus 5.0 simplifies the installation and configuration for non-technical users. Configuration and management: Nessus v5.0 configuration and management is now done 100% through the GUI

Scan policy creation and design (for improved effectiveness) - Users now enjoy improved effectiveness when creating scan policies. Over two dozen new pre-built plugin filters make it easy for security and compliance professionals to simplify policy creation for laser-focused scans on the areas that matter most. Users can quickly select multiple filter criteria, such as, Vulnerability Publication Date, public vulnerability database ID (OSVDB, Bugtraq, CERT Advisory, and Secunia), Plugin type (local or remote), information assurance vulnerability alert (IAVA), and more, to quickly identify easily-exploitable vulnerabilities.Scan for all easily remotely-exploitable vulnerabilities for which there is an exploit published in your favorite exploit framework.

Scan execution (for improved efficiency) - Users can take advantage of real-time scan results, on-the-fly filtering and sorting, and streamlined results navigation. A new vulnerability summary and redesigned host summary make it easy to see risk level without even running a report. As the scan is being run, not only can you see the results as they are being gathered, but navigate and filter on them as well. This allows you to easily act upon the vulnerability data while the scan is happening.

Report customization and creation (for improved communication with all parts of the organization) - New reporting features allow for improved communication of vulnerability results with all parts of the organization:Results filtering and report creation: Results filtering and report creation is more flexible than ever before. Users can apply multiple result filtering criteria, and targeted reports can be generated against the filtered results. Reports can be generated in native Nessus formats, HTML, and now PDF formats, Multiple report templates can be combined into one report.

Download Firefox 11 Beta
Firefox 11 Beta

Firefox Beta is the build for those who like a little bit of jeopardy, but who don’t want to risk everything by trying out Firefox Aurora, the early alpha build of Firefox. Firefox Beta gives you a sneak peek at the next version of Firefox six weeks ahead of its final release, offering a relatively stable build that’s not quite ready for primetime, but still pretty solid.

Whereas Firefox Aurora installs as a completely separate application alongside your existing Firefox installation, Firebox Beta will replace the stable build. Should you subsequently wish to go back to the safer version, you’ll need to manually download the stable version and install it over the top of the beta build.

Confirm which build you have by selecting About Firefox from the Firefox menu or button (it’s inside the Help menu if using the Firefox button).

There’s not an awful lot to get excited about with Firefox 11 Beta. Firefox Sync now tentatively supports synchronising add-ons in addition to all your other settings – you’ll see Add-ons appear as an additional option when choosing exactly what to sync from the Firefox Sync Setup menu.

Support for importing data from Chrome has also been partially implemented in the form of cookies, history and bookmarks – you’ll see the option appear when you open the Bookmarks Library and choose Import and Backup > Import Data from another Browser.

Developers will also welcome the addition of two new tools in addition to the raft of extras first introduced in Firefox 9 – these are a Style Editor for tweaking CSS settings on the fly, and a new 3D view (Tilt) for Page Inspector. via downloadcrew

Bitdefender Carrier IQ Detector

The deeply integrated Carrier IQ software on mobile devices has made the rounds lately. Check out this introductory post for detailed information about Carrier IQ. The technology has recently been discovered on Android and Apple smartphones in a way that the discoverer called rootkit-like. Users have a hard time finding out if Carrier IQ is running on their phone, and virtually no possibility of finding out which data it collects or transfers. To top it all off, there is no native option to disable Carrier IQ from running on the phone.

If you are like me, you’d probably want to know if a program that can virtually access all data on the phone is running on it and with which server and companies it communicates.

Bitdefender Carrier IQ Finder is a new program for Android mobile phones by Bitdefender that can be used to find out if the technology is running on a phone.

Android users need to download the application from Android Market where it is available for free. The app has been designed to detect Carrier IQ on Android phones. It cannot remove the technology nor detect or remove malicious software from the phone.

Android users can point their browsers to the Bitdefender carrier IQ Finder market place listing to install the program directly from there. It is necessary to be logged in a Google account to install the app.

The app will search for traces of Carrier IQ on the phone on start up.

Bitdefender Carrier IQ Detector

A red screen after the scan indicates that Carrier IQ has been found running on the system, a green screen that the technology has not been found on the smartphone.

What can you do if Carrier IQ has been found on your phone? It may be virtually impossible to remove the technology completely from the phone. You could contact your carrier for additional information about the technology. (via)

Download THC SSL DoS/DDoS Tool
THC-SSL-DOS is a tool to verify the performance of SSL. Establishing a secure SSLconnection requires 15x more processing power on the server than on the client. THC-SSL-DOS exploits this asymmetric property by overloading the server and knocking it off theInternet. This problem affects all SSL implementations today. The vendors are aware of this problem since 2003 and the topic has been widely discussed.

This attack further exploits the SSL secure Renegotiation feature to trigger thousands of renegotiations via single TCP connection.

Usage
./thc-ssl-dos 127.3.133.7 443
Handshakes 0 [0.00 h/s], 0 Conn, 0 Err
Secure Renegotiation support: yes
Handshakes 0 [0.00 h/s], 97 Conn, 0 Err
Handshakes 68 [67.39 h/s], 97 Conn, 0 Err
Handshakes 148 [79.91 h/s], 97 Conn, 0 Err
Handshakes 228 [80.32 h/s], 100 Conn, 0 Err
Handshakes 308 [80.62 h/s], 100 Conn, 0 Err
Handshakes 390 [81.10 h/s], 100 Conn, 0 Err
Handshakes 470 [80.24 h/s], 100 Conn, 0 Err

Comparing flood DDoS vs. SSL-Exhaustion attack

A traditional flood DDoS attack cannot be mounted from a single DSL connection. This is because the bandwidth of a server is far superior to the bandwidth of a DSL connection: A DSL connection is not an equal opponent to challenge the bandwidth of a server.

This is turned upside down for THC-SSL-DOS: The processing capacity for SSL handshakes is far superior at the client side: A laptop on a DSL connection can challenge a server on a 30Gbit link. Traditional DDoS attacks based on flooding are sub optimal: Servers are prepared to handle large amount of traffic and clients are constantly sending requests to the server even when not under attack.

The SSL-handshake is only done at the beginning of a secure session and only if security is required. Servers are _not_ prepared to handle large amount of SSL Handshakes. The worst attack scenario is an SSL-Exhaustion attack mounted from thousands of clients (SSL-DDoS).

Tips & Tricks for Whitehats
The average server can do 300 handshakes per second. This would require 10-25% of your laptops CPU.
Use multiple hosts (SSL-DOS) if an SSL Accelerator is used.
Be smart in target acquisition: The HTTPS Port (443) is not always the best choice. Other SSL enabled ports are more unlikely to use an SSL Accelerator (like the POP3S, SMTPS, … or the secure database port).

Counter measurements

No real solutions exists. The following steps can mitigate (but not solve) the problem:
  • Disable SSL-Renegotiation
  • Invest into SSL Accelerator
Either of these countermeasures can be circumventing by modifying THC-SSL-DOS. A better solution is desireable. Somebody should fix this.

You can download THC-SSL-DOS here:

Open Your Google Documents Directly into MS Office
Google Cloud Connect

Google Cloud Connect, as described in the above video, is free plugin that lets you easily integrate Google Docs with Microsoft Office.
You can write documents inside any of the Microsoft Office program and then use the Cloud Connect toolbar to directly upload that document to your online Google Docs account. The link between the local Office document and the online Google document is maintained so you can later edit the same document locally and sync the changes with Google Docs.

This useful plugin just got a little better today.

Google has released a new update to Cloud Connect that would let Office users directly open any of their existing Google Documents directly into Microsoft Office for editing. Just choose the “Open from Google Docs” open under the Google Cloud Connect toolbar and select the document that you want to edit locally.

There’s however a big limitation here – you can only download those documents from Google Docs that are still in the original Office format and were not converted into the Google Docs format at the time of uploading. Also, any documents uploaded to Google Docs via Cloud Print cannot be edited online – Google Docs will just act as a store for those documents.

Google Cloud Connect works with all the recent versions of Microsoft Office and supports Word, Excel and PowerPoint files (including the 2010 formats like .docx or .xlsx). See the other alternatives to Cloud Connect.

LibreOffice 3.3.3 Now Available

The current production release of LibreOffice, regarded as suitable for corporate deployment, has been updated. LibreOffice 3.3.3 fixes several bugs and, according to the developers, "improves the security of the suite". The Document Foundation says, "users of LibreOffice 3.3.2 are invited to update their software." The release notes do not refer to any specific vulnerabilities being fixed.

The developers do note that all the security fixes from OpenOffice.org 3.3.0 are incorporated in this release and suggest that the release may have more fixes than that as "a side effect of the code cleanups", pointing to a Michael Meeks blog entry from April on the subject.

The Document Foundation plans to maintain the 3.3 branch of LibreOffice till the end of the year to allow users to smoothly migrate to LibreOffice 3.4. Currently, LibreOffice 3.4.0 is available as an "early adopter/power user" release and is not blessed for production use by the developers.

Details about this release can be found in a post on the Document Foundation Blog and in the release notes. LibreOffice 3.3.3 is available to download for Windows, Mac OS X and Linux from the project's web site.

LibreOffice forked from the OpenOffice.org office suite following Oracle'sacquisition of Sun Microsystems, the original copyright holders of the name and main sponsors of the project. Oracle has since donated the OpenOffice.org code to the Apache Foundation. LibreOffice source code is licensed under the LGPL version 3.

Microsoft Download Manager

Microsoft Download Manager is a lightweight and easy-to-use tool that you may use to download files from the Internet. There are no complicated settings to configure and all you need to do is paste the file URL to begin the download process.

It can run minimized in the system tray and pops-up a unobtrusive notification every time a file download is complete or if the program has trouble downloading a particular file.

The software can only handle files that are served over the HTTP protocol (no FTP) but it does support downloading of files that require authentication. It was originally designed to help users download files from Microsoft sites but there’s nothing stopping you from using this program with any other site.

Microsoft Download Manager is compatible with all recent versions of Windows including XP, Vista and Windows 7.

New Beta Version of CCleaner for Mac
Piriform Ltd has released a Mac version of its popular CCleaner system cleanup software. Previously only available for Windows,CCleaner for Mac is currently in beta, and therefore far from complete, but at this early stage it is already starting to show signs of promise; if the Windows version of the application is anything to go by, there should be a good deal to look forward to in the future.

The beta version of the app can clean up after OS X itself as well as a couple of popular web browser. On the operating system front, you can free up disk space and maintain your privacy by emptying out the trash as well as clearing out the temporary folder and logs such as recent documents, applications and servers.

When it comes to cleaning up after your web browser, you are only in luck if you are using Firefox or Safari. In the case of both browsers, CCleaner can erase caches, browsing history, cookies and download history, while Firefox users can also wipe out the saved form information that has been stored. All of these options are controlled by check boxes, so if there’s anything you would rather keep – such as form data – simply leave this option unchecked.

Using CCleaner is a simple three step process. Start by using the check boxes to indicate which parts of your system you want to clean up, and then click the Analyze button to find out just how many files and how much space is involved. If you are happy to proceed, just click the Clean button and everything will be taken care of for you. Simple and effective, CCleaner helps to speed up a process that could be performed manually, but would be a lengthier task.

Future releases of the software will add more features and support for additional applications – while there are no standout features at the moment, this is still worth installing and keeping an eye on over the coming weeks and months. You can find our more and download a free copy of the application by paying a visit to the CCleaner for Mac review page.

Download Thunderbird 5.0b1

Frustrated by the wait for a major new version of Thunderbird? It’s been 18 months since the last major revision, but you won’t have to wait as long for future releases to skip by: Mozilla has moved Thunderbird to the same rapid release cycle as Firefox, which means expect new version numbers every three months or so.

This move explains why there won’t be any Thunderbird 4: the program will share the same version number as Firefox’s browser engine (gecko), which it shares.

Like Firefox, future updates will be quicker, but won’t be as major. Anyone expecting the same kind of major revamp seen in Firefox 4 will be disappointed here, but there are some new features worthy of mention in this 5.0b1 release: improved email account wizard, better and more versatile tab handling, and a brand new Add-ons Manager and extensions management API. There’s also a new troubleshooting information page (accessible from the Help menu) that contains key information about your individual Thunderbird setup to aid fixing problems that may occur.

There are other minor improvements too – such as the fact attachments now display with file sizes – along with a host of unspecified bug fixes. Thunderbird 5.0b1 is also a landmark release for Mac users, dropping PowerPC support and focusing exclusively on Intel-powered Macs.

Note this is the first public beta of Thunderbird 5.
Verdict:

Evolution rather than revolution is the buzzword for Thunderbird, but all the improvements are welcome, nonetheless.

Download LibreOffice 3.4.0

The Document Foundation has announced the release of LibreOffice 3.4.0, the second major update of the cross-platform, open-source office application since it was launched as a spin-off from OpenOffice back in September 2010.

LibreOffice 3.4.0 includes major updates for its spreadsheet application, Calc, plus a revamped interface across the entire suite. Despite being a stable release, TDF has stressed that version 3.4.0 is aimed at power users and LibreOffice community members, urging other environments – including the corporate sector – to hold off installing version 3.4 until 3.4.1 is released later this year.

New features in the Calc spreadsheet include improved performance and compatibility with Excel spreadsheets. The Data Pilot component has been renamed as Pivot Table, and supports unlimited fields as well as named ranges as a data source.

Both Impress and Draw now feature an improved HTML export option with an option for a thumbnail image gallery on the contents page. Linux users will benefit from improved text rendering, which now matches the Linux desktop.

Other changes are more minor, and detailed on the LibreOffice site. In addition there are numerous bug fixes and efficiency improvements, with streamlined code and better compression schemes allowing the Windows installer to shrink by 30MB.

LibreOffice 3.4.0 is open source and available now as a free download for Windows, Mac and Linux.

Download Apache MyFaces Core 2.1.0
The Apache MyFaces project, which tracks the JavaServer Faces (JSF) specification, has announced the release of its JSF 2.1 implementation: MyFaces Core 2.1.0. Version 2.1 of JavaServer Faces was the second maintenance release of the web framework, following 2009's release of 2.0 which improved ease of use, performance and functionality. MyFaces Core is the foundation for a number of other MyFaces projects such as Trinidad, Tobago and Tomahawk, which all offer different styles of JSF-compliant components.

Only minor changes were made to the specification; similarly, MyFaces Core 2.1.0 sees only small changes. The developers also released 2.0.6, an update to MyFaces Core 2.0, the JSF 2.0 implementation. Both releases include a number of bug fixes and performance improvements.

Both packages have passed the JSR-314/JSF TCK (Technology Compatibility Kit) testing as 100% compliant with the relevant versions of the JSF specification. Binary and source releases of MyFaces 2.1.0 and 2.0.6 are available to download from the MyFaces site with both being released under the Apache Licence 2.0. Release notes with links to the issue tracker are available for 2.1.0 and 2.0.6.

Download MadAppLauncher , Visual Application Launcher

Windows: Most application launchers take a minimal approach, but MadAppLauncher shows you what applications you can launch and then lets you open them with a keystroke. You can still launch apps entirely with keyboard commands, but you'll have the benefit of a full UI to see what you're doing.

We love application launchers like Launchy and appreciate their minimal design, but sometimes visuals are better, especially if you're trying to get the hang of using an application launcher in the first place. MadAppLauncher is designed to give you a customizable UI that lets you see what you're doing, but also stays out of the way so you can use keystrokes to launch the applications you need. Plus, it's a snap to customize and create hotkeys for your commonly used applications.

To assign an application to a hotkey in the launcher, open MadAppLauncher. The interface has rows of buttons that correspond to the keys on your keyboard. Then drag an application on top of the button that represents the key you want to use to launch it. If you run out of buttons or keys, you can assign entire tabs of keys by clicking through the tabs at the top of the configuration window.

Then, as long as MadAppLauncher is running and you see its icon in the taskbar, you can start programs with two or three keystrokes. When you want to start a program, simply tap the hotkey you have assigned to MadAppLauncher (the default is "Ctrl+~" but you can change this in the options) and then press the button you have assigned to the application.

MadAppLauncher isn't the most minimal launcher we've seen, but it gets serious points for being flexible and customizable in an intuitive way. The app gives users the ability to drag and drop apps onto it, customize tabs full of shortcuts, and tweak all of its settings easily: it's a great way to go from never using a launcher before to never wasting time launching an app with the mouse again. Best of all, it's free.

ArpON v2.2 Released – Tool To Detect & Block ARP Spoofing
ArpON (ARP handler inspection) is a portable handler daemon that make ARP secure in order to avoid the Man In The Middle (MITM) through ARP Spoofing/Poisoning attacks. It detects and blocks also derived attacks by it for more complex attacks, as: DHCP Spoofing, DNS Spoofing, WEB Spoofing, Session Hijacking and SSL/TLS Hijacking & co attacks.

This is possible using three kinds of anti ARP Poisoning techniques: the first is based on SARPI or “Static ARP Inspection” in statically configured networks without DHCP; the second on DARPI or “Dynamic ARP Inspection” in dynamically configured networks having DHCP; the third on HARPI or “Hybrid ARP Inspection” in “hybrid” networks, that is in statically and dynamically (DHCP) configured networks together.

SARPI, DARPI and HARPI protects both unidirectional, bidirectional and distributed attacks: into “Unidirectional protection” is required that ArpON is installed and running on one node of the connection attacked; into “Bidirectional protection” is required that ArpON is installed and running on two nodes of the connection attacked; into “Distributed protection” is required that ArpON is installed and running on all nodes of the connections attacked. All other nodes without ArpON will not be protected from attack.

ArpON is therefore a host-based solution that doesn’t modify ARP’s standard base protocol, but rather sets precise policies by using SARPI for static networks, DARPI for dynamic networks and HARPI for hybrid networks thus making today’s standardized protocol working and secure from any foreign intrusion.

Features
It detects and blocks Man In The Middle through ARP Spoofing/Poisoning attacks in statically, dynamically (DHCP), hybrid configured networks
It detects and blocks derived attacks: DHCP Spoofing, DNS Spoofing WEB Spoofing, Session Hijacking, SSL/TLS Hijacking & co
It detects and blocks unidirectional, bidirectional and distributed attacks
Doesn’t affect the communication efficiency of ARP protocol
Doesn’t affect the race response time from attacks
Multi-threading on all OS supported
It manages the network interface into unplug, boot, hibernation and suspension OS features
It works in userspace for OS portability reasons
Easily configurable via command line switches, provided that you have root permissions
Tested against Ettercap, Cain & Abel, dsniff and other tools
